Type design, fonts and typographic creation :

Type design refers to the creation of integral typefaces and unique lettering for specific projects. For integral typefaces, the type designer creates an alphabet, glyphs and families and then finalizes the typeface in a software. Then, the designer proposes the sale of this font under license on a dedicated website or foundry.

Commission: A client can commission a complete font for a magazine or a company. The client will then ask for the exclusivity of this font and it will become an integral part of an identity. This exclusivity which is sold gives the client the assurance that he will be the only one to use this font.

Type design can concern the creation of couple of letters. For example, for a logotype or a brand signature. But also letterings, or glyphs for press supports such as magazines, art books, etc...

Project : Turnover is both a typography and a series of shapes and signs. Constructed on the basis of square, Turnover is a fixed width type. Its creation enhances the balance between the surface and black and white. Its grid-based construction allows the creation of varied and strong layouts.

View Writer is a typeface created in 2009. It has been used to cultural identities and editorial content. Here it is remastered and available in 3 styles (3 weights) & 2 versions : View Writer Text & View Writer Simple. Regarding the View Writer Simple version, each space between letters is marked by an underscore symbol which gives the apparence of typewritten text.

The Baker typeface is based on the Pogliotte typeface created by the studio in 2007 inspired by notes and musical scores. The baker is a real hymn to decorative art & cultural aesthetics of the 20s & 30s. Her name is a tribute to the great artist Josephine Baker. This typeface was created in 2 versions : Regular & Extended.

Type Designer skills: A type designer has skills as a drawer on paper. He or she is trained in lettering, visual communication and design. The designer has an extensive knowledge of the history of typography and printing as a whole. The type designer masters perfectly the curves of beziers. What allows to pass the lettering made on paper sketch on a software of vector drawing.

Finally, it is important to know the basic rules to avoid construction errors. This in order to create legible, effective and functional letters.

Work process : The designer draws the letters by hand. At this stage, it is a matter of determining the aesthetics and the general style of the font. Sometimes, the lettering is drawn directly on a DTP software in order to be available in a vector version. This depends on the work habits of the designer. In any case the work should be vectorized.

The creation of the main glyphs and styles is the second important step.

According to Bodoni, the famous typographer, there are 4 precepts to follow in order to create a harmonious and readable font. Two of these precepts are crucial. The first precept concerns the regularity of the design of the alphabet. Curves or graphic elements must be found regularly in all the letters. Thus the curves of O, G or C have a common construction which ensures their homogeneity. The second precept concerns the elegance of the style. Namely, the lettering must be perfectly designed, finished and reflect good taste.

Types of production : Type designers create so-called fonts of texts. In French, it calls "typographies de labeur". These typefaces are used for current text as well as for titles. In general, they are made up of a very wide family: Bold, regular, light, extra-light, extended, etc...

Some graphic designers are also type designers. Often, they create fonts that are called "display". These fonts have a very original style, unique with formal audacity. They are used for titles in magazines or art books. Their specific design gives a visual strength to graphic compositions by singling them out.

The creation of a font is a long and laborious work. It requires moral qualities (patience and constancy) and artistic and technical qualities.

Uses of a font : A font is intended to be used on all types of support. Its circulation in the world makes it a flexible and discreet cultural form.

It enriches the visual landscape and contributes to the efficient and formal transmission of messages and textual content of all types.

Fonts travel the world and are found in both industrial and artistic projects.

The world of music, cinema and video games regularly calls upon type designers. For the music world, it can be for a music video. For the cinema, unique creations are sometimes commissioned for a generic. And finally, video game production companies use fonts to build the information environment of a game.

Deliverables : A font is a software file that is sold under a license. This license called EULA is a contractual agreement between the licensee (the user) and the creator of the font. This contract circumscribes and determines precisely the rights of use of the font and the number of users who can use it. In general, the font is delivered as an otf, ttf or WOFF file for use on the internet. The first type of license is often intended for printing and use on the Internet. Other licenses are established according to the needs of the buyer (licensee or user). These can be for digital marketing use or for use in the virtual world, such as the metaverse or NFTS.

Conclusion : Type design is very important in all of fields of creation. Typography or lettering designers bring an added value to communication projects. Therefore, big brands hire typography designers in order to value their project.
